Is Music Composition Research? - a discussion about Artistic Research

In posing this question, we sponsor a discussion about the nature of Artistic Research as it relates to music composition, its performance, production and dissemination. The term has established its currency and has become the acknowledged way to reference what has also been described as; Practice-based Research, Practice-led Research, Action Research or similar. Many established understandings about what is meant by the term and the idea of artistic knowledge will be examined through case studies involving music composition, music performance and its relationship with new and developing technologies. Social practices involving community engagement also play an important part in enunciating new areas of interdisciplinary collaboration between creative practices, musicology and anthropology. The defining nature of artistic knowledge will be explored in an effort to unpack complimentary questions such as “When is research Art? or When is Art not research?”  Some focus will also be given to consider ideas involving: experience; reflection; methodology; impact; and how these issues are influencing the making and disseminating of contemporary art music works.
