Today’s Musical Future: reshaping pedagogy for tomorrow’s cultural leaders

This paper presents the goals and aims of a proposed three-year DECRA research project into curriculum design for tertiary music theory programs. This research project aims to create an innovative model of contemporary music theory teaching in higher education. Current curricular structures in tertiary music theory fall increasingly behind the skills demanded by a rapidly evolving music industry. The rise of digital music platforms, a changing landscape for the reception and dissemination of music, employment instability and industry demand for entrepreneurial skills all require a new approach to traditional conservatory-model teaching. This project will investigate, analyse and synthesise new teaching methods in music theory for the tertiary sector. The project is vital for renewal of the field to modernise music’s pedagogical approach and produce engaged artistic leaders of the future.
