Amazing Albums From Our Students!

Tuesday 3 May 2016

Many music students at the ANU, whilst completing their degrees, have the opportunity to use the incredible recording facilities here at the School of Music. Over the past six months, two of the PhD guitar students have released albums, recorded and produced by student Louis Montgomery, along with several students having upcoming releases on newly recorded music.

Andrew Blanch released the acclaimed Spanish Guitar Music in December, 2015. It was received positively, and follows as another highlight of Blanch’s career, after winning the Inaugural Whitworth Roach competition in September 2015, and the ANU Chamber Music Prize along with Callum Henshaw. Blanch has also been very active internationally, performing in San Francisco, Paris, and London. Spanish Guitar Music can be purchased here.

In March 2016, Callum Henshaw released his debut full-length solo album. Echo and Return featured works by Australian composers Sculthorpe, and Smith. Henshaw has also been accepted to study at the Akademie fur Tonkunst in Darmstadt between May and August 2016 as fieldwork for his PhD, as well as being a finalist in this year’s Adelaide Guitar Festival. Henshaw’s latest album, and his other recordings, can be found here.

Recent Honours graduate, Ellen Falconer, has completed her album Respighi Uncut, which will be released on Thursday 5th May. The album features the piano compositions of Italian composer Respighi, many of which have never previously been recorded. Falconer will also begin a postgraduate degree in September at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her music can be found on her website.

Ariel Nurhadi, another classical guitar PhD student, has also been working on an album, for which a release date is yet to be set. His album will feature the works performed by Spanish guitarist, Andres Segovia (1893-1987). This recording is a historically inspired performance of 20th century guitar music by Ponce, Tedesco, and Turina.

The school, as always, is proud to provide the facilities and services to record the fabulous students making music, and contributing to the international musical community.
