The School of Music is delighted to announce that conductor, harpsichordist, and fortepianist Dr Erin Helyard will be joining the staff as a Lecturer in Music from July 2014.

Dr Helyard is at the forefront of a new generation of young musicians who combine the latest musicological and historical enquiry with a passion for promoting live music in contemporary culture.

“Erin is internationally regarded as one of the finest virtuoso-scholars of his generation, a musician with an already outstanding reputation as an expert in historically informed performance” said Head of the School of Music, Professor Peter Tregear.

Currently a Lecturer in Historical Performance at the New Zealand School of Music, Dr Helyard studied harpsichord at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and completed a Masters in fortepiano and a PhD in musicology at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University, Montréal in 2011. Erin has been a member the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as of the award-winning Ensemble Caprice. Erin is a founder and artistic director of Pinchgut Opera and a central founding member of the Orchestra of the Antipodes.  Since 2013, Erin has been music director of Hobart Baroque, most recently conducting  Handel’s Orlando from the harpsichord at the Theatre Royal to great acclaim.

Dr Helyard said “I am delighted to be returning to Australia, and also to be joining an institution which not only gives me access to a world-class faculty and an extraordinary collection of historic keyboard instruments but also shares my passionate commitment to the highest values of scholarship, performance, and outreach. I look forward very much to contributing to the vibrant musical life of Canberra and beyond.”

Other staff at the School of Music with both significant performing and scholarly interests in early music include Dr Calvin Bowman, Dr David Irving, Dr Alexander Hunter, Dr Paul McMahon, and Professor Peter Tregear.
