Hanna Yu is a Korean-born violinist who relocated to Canberra, Australia in 2016 after her study and career in the United States of America.
In 2008, Yu moved to New York as she completed her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Violin Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in the USA where she served as a member of The Graduate String Quartet under the guidance of the Grammy Award-Winning Pacifica String Quartet and worked as a teaching assistant for the quartet.
Dr. Yu studied music theory as her minor and completed additional studies of viola performance and Baroque violin performance. For her doctoral thesis, titled, Korean-Euro Dualism and Selected String Compositions by Hyo-Shin Na, her particular interest focused on the dualistic nature of Western-European concert music that had been initiated from two cultures, Korean and Western-European at the same time. Since then, Yu has been expanding her interest on the contemporary compositions and continually working towards this particular subject, Korean-Euro Dualism.
In New York, Yu actively maintained her performing and teaching career as a sponsored artist by Asian Society of Arts. She was a faculty member at the New Jersey City University, Monmouth Conservatory of Music, and appeared as a guest lecturer at the New York University.
Her New York debut recital and a following solo recital were presented by 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 Performance Series of Yamaha Artist Services, Inc.  Yu gave two world premieres in New York including Journey I by Youngmi Ha at Yamaha Hall and Sonata for Marimba and Violin by Mark Janello at the Music on MacDougal, Greenwich Village Concert Series at Player’s Theatre. She also was a member of different orchestras including Opera Manhattan, Chelsea Opera, Pacific Encore Performances, New Rochelle Opera, New Jersey Association of Varismo Opera.
Throughout her career, Dr. Yu has been appeared on various stages in the United States, South Korea and China as a soloist, an orchestra player and a chamber musician. On those stages, she studied and collaborated with recognized musicians and artists including The Chicago String Quartet, The Kronos Quartet, Martha Graham Dance Company, The Pacifica String Quartet, and The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.
Hanna recently joined as a member of the ANU Open School of Music faculty and Canberra Symphony Orchestra.
