Elizabeth Sheppard, First Nations composer and ANU School of Music HDR MPhil student, has been commissioned to create a new a cappella program with First Nations composer Sonya Holowell and The Song Company that is a musical reaction to, and exploration of, the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

They are currently touring Newcastle, Parramatta, Darlinghurst and Woolongong, including a live broadcast by the Australian Digital Concert Hall, and they will perform in the Larry Sitsky Recital Room, ANU School of Music, at 7pm next Tuesday 4 October.

Elizabeth composed seventeen fully notated choral works (40 minutes of music) for this concert, which is grouped as ten sets and interspersed with Sonya’s music. She also co-wrote two songs with Arrernte composer Rhubee Neale for this concert.

Elizabeth cites The Song Company’s Artistic Director Antony Pitts, her ANU supervisor Associate Professor Christopher Sainsbury, former AMC CEO Dr John Davis and the Ngarra-Burria program, of which she is an alumna, as her compositional mentors and supporters.
