Whitworth Roach Classical Music Concert celebrates five years!

The Whitworth Roach Classical Music Concert continues to celebrate talented musicians of international acclaim by inviting them to visit and perform at ANU School of Music. This year the School of Music is proud to welcome Louise Johnson (harp) and Janet Webb (flute). 

Louise Johnson, is one of Australia’s leading virtuosic harpists. As former Principal Harp of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, playing for over 50 years and Sydney Conservatorium teacher of 35 years, Louise brings to her performances an added depth of colour and artistry on her beloved instrument.

Janet Webb began her orchestral career as Principal Flute in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra before her appointment as Principal Flute of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1985 - a position she held until 2017. Throughout her career, Janet has performed as a soloist and chamber musician, described as “one of Australia’s finest instrumentalists” (Sydney Morning Herald).

The Whitworth-Roach Competition Final will take place 6pm, Thursday 19 September - on stage, Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music. Tickets available.

Louise Johnson began her harp studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School at the age of 12, and later continued her studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Salzedo Summer Harp School in the United States, with Alice Chalifoux.

She began her professional career at age 15 and at 18 was appointed Principal Harp of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. This position she she held for one year before continuing pursuing a freelance career overseas. She lived in london between 1983 and 1985, performing regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra as Guest Principal and Second Harp under the batons of Claudio Abbado and Richard Hickox. She also gave recitals in Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room.

Louise Johnson has performed with all the major Australian Symphony and Opera and Ballet Orchestras, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australia Ensemble and has toured Australia with companies such as the Bolshoi and Sadler's Wells Ballet Companies. She has also played for the Bolshoi Opera and with Luciano Berio, in a concert of his own works.

Giving her first performance with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14, she later joined the orchestra as a permanent member, and was appointed as Principal Harp in 1985.


After obtaining an Arts/ Music degree , Janet began her musical career as Principal Flute in the Singapore Symphony in 1980. 

 In 1985 she  was appointed as  Principal Flute in the Sydney Symphony - a position she held until 2017.  

Throughout her career she has performed as a soloist and chamber musician -  including a double concerto with Sir James Galway. Janet has appeared as a guest with almost all the orchestras in Australia ,including ACO, AOBO, Queensland ,Adelaide,Tasmanian  and  Canberra Symphony orchestras. 

In 2010  Janet was chosen from flautists worldwide as a juror for the International Nicolet Flute Competition held in Beijing. 

Janet is still a busy chamber musician ,a teacher , and is still appearing as a guest in Australia’s Symphony orchestras. She is also President  of the Roseville Music Club and President of the NSW Flute Society.
