This evening brings together two inspiring elements of Persian heritage – poetry and music – which together explore the nature of human existence and love. Drawing from the wisdom of 12th and 13th century poets Rumi, Sa’adi, Khayam and Hafez as well as the modern poems of internationally renowned poet Dr Zahra Taheri herself, this evening is a chance to hear the beauty of Persian poetry with its natural accompaniment – music.

This poetry-music event is supported by a collaboration between the ANU School of Music and the ANU Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies (CAIS), where Dr Zahra Taheri is honorary Associate Professor of the Persian Studies Program. The Jazmourian Ensemble, Ensemble-in-Residence at the ANU School of Music, will showcase the Persian setar, kamancheh and voice. Malek Mohammadi Nejad and Dr Anna McDonald will be performing original and traditional Persian music. Persian music draws its rhythms, concepts and themes from poetry, and the two genres together have preserved and developed the extraordinary subtlety and beauty of Persian culture for thousands of years.

The program runs from 6pm to 7.15pm, followed by light refreshments and drinks at Wig & Pen until 8pm.
