Each year the School of Music (‘the School’) within the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (‘the College’) may offer one award known as the Friends of the School of Music Transition Award.
The objective of the award is to assist a School of Music graduate with the transition between formal study and a professional career in music.
The value of the award is between $2,000 and $5,000.
The prize will be on offer from 2025-2029.
The application period for the award will commence on Thursday 2nd of April and close at 23:59 on Sunday 3rd May 2026 (AEST).
Funding for this award has been provided by the Friends of the School of Music.
ELIGIBILITY
The award is available each year to an ANU student who:
- was a domestic or international student; and
- has completed, within the last 2 calendar years as at the closing date for applications, the requirements for the award of a Bachelor with Honours, Masters, or Doctoral degree in the School of Music (3rd May 2024).
SELECTION AND CONSTRAINTS
Selection is by application, and all supporting documentation (where applicable) is submitted on the prescribed form and must be submitted on, or prior to, the closing date published on the ANU Prizes website.
Selection is made on the basis of academic merit and may take into consideration other factors such as contribution to the music community, evidence of financial hardship or career-support need, as demonstrated against career objectives within the application. The award is offered by the selection committee chaired by the ANU Head of the School of Music, the Performance Convenor (or their representative), a representative of the Friends of the School of Music and one independent external member with specialist music expertise.
The selection committee reserves the right to make no award if it considers there is no applicant of sufficient merit. The selection committee may also vary the number of awards and/or offer the award at other times in exceptional circumstances or based on the standard of applications or students (where funds allow). In the situation where an award is shared, the value of the award will be split between the recipients.
Where required, the University Medal Committee will be available for qualitative or subjective assessment determinants if a decision is not reached within the College to determine prize winners.
RECIPIENT OBLIGATIONS
The awarding of a prize is based on the information provided to the University. A prize may be declined by the recipient once they have been notified as the prize winner. This must be provided in writing to ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences no later than four weeks from notification.
