Brian & Banksy (2020)

Brian & Banksy an Odyssey (2020). Animated film with soundtrack by Frank Millward, performed live by Saxophone Quartet (Premiered 2020 by Delta Saxophone Quartet - London). Watch here

Brian and Bansky is an animated film with a soundtrack performed live by saxophone quartet, commissioned by the Delta Saxophone Quartet.

The work presents a fantasy narrative in a contemporary electro-acoustic-audio-visual format. The work is about a Budgerigar, Brian and a dog, Bansky. The piece is eclectic in nature and brings together interactive extended instrumental ensemble techniques, improvisation, audio-visual projection, site specific Australian bird sounds, and performance art in the form of two interlocking components:

  • A video projection piece with an embedded electro-acoustic soundtrack
  • A score performed live with the video projection by a saxophone quartet.

The work is inspired by the word ‘Budgerigar’, of Australian Indigenous origins. An alteration of gijirrigaa from the Gamilaroi Murri people from the area that extends from Singleton in the Hunter Valley to the Warrumbungle Mountains. Starting with the sound of this word the work explores ideas about place of origin, confinement, migration and models and metaphors of freedom.

Brian & Banksy is 20- 25 minutes in duration and was commissioned by the Delta Quartet (UK). The work is part of a larger project, Flicks, a set of films performed with live scores for saxophone quartet. Scores written by a group of international composers. The project I scheduled to tour UK and European Film Festivals, schools, community centres, and rural areas of Europe and the UK.
