Contemporary Music Production

Are you passionate about music and the role it plays in the world? Do you want to learn how it is written, performed, and recorded using state-of-the-art facilities? The Contemporary Music Production major at the ANU School of Music will not only provide you with the skills and knowledge to produce music; it will also give you opportunities to apply these skills and create a series of music works that ensure you stand out.

The Contemporary Music Production major equips students with skills and knowledge in blended recording, performance and composition practice. It fosters practical experience in diverse production environments, from Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) to world-class large recording studio facilities in the School of Music. A bespoke music theory approach focuses on contemporary styles, facilitating a deep understanding of recording, composition and performance techniques used in contemporary music.

The major actively supports students in pursuing their passion for contemporary genres that interest them, including popular music in its myriad forms, jazz, classical, and global music. It will also challenge students to incorporate emergent techniques and approaches into their creative practice. Through mixing solo and collaborative practice, the major emphasizes developing interpersonal and ethical practices to prepare students for professional work in music communities. Students engage with cutting-edge research to critically analyse the role of music production in addressing global challenges, and study digital literacy skills to distribute their work. The Contemporary Music Production major culminates with a flagship research project, where students can make a long form recorded work or develop a live concert event.
