Celebrating a legacy: Larry Sitsky's 90th Birthday Concert

This past Monday, the ANU School of Music and The Friends of the School of Music had the honor of celebrating the extraordinary legacy of Larry Sitsky, a foundation member of the School since 1966. The Larry Sitsky 90th Birthday Concert brought together esteemed colleagues, former students, and a full house of admirers to pay tribute to his nearly six decades of contributions as a composer, pianist, scholar, and teacher.

The evening began with a heartfelt foreword by Prof. Malcolm Gillies, setting the stage for the celebration of Larry’s immense impact. Prof. Adrian Walter, Head of the School of Music, and Susan Cox, Secretary of the Friends of the School of Music, warmly welcomed the audience, reflecting on Larry’s profound influence on the musical community.

During the interval, Larry’s new book, A National Treasure, was launched by Jeanell Carrigan and Rita Crews, adding another milestone to his remarkable career.

The performances were a testament to Larry’s enduring legacy, featuring ANU School of Music faculty and alumni. Bassoon teacher Ben Hoadley and clarinet teacher Jason Noble, accompanied by pianist Edward Neeman, delivered captivating performances that highlighted the depth and breadth of Larry’s influence on contemporary music. Current Honours student Vivienne Tran and alumnus Dr Aron Chew also graced the stage, showcasing their exceptional talents and honoring their mentor through their music.

The concert was more than a celebration of Larry Sitsky’s 90 years; it was a reflection of the countless lives he has touched and the lasting impact he has made on the world of music.
