Composition major or minor

At the heart of the University's composition department is its renowned faculty, comprising composers whose music is heard around the world in concert halls and opera houses, in theatres, in film, and on recordings. The department remains especially notable for the diversity of styles represented by its teachers and alumni.
As a student majoring in composition at the School of Music, you will develop skills in melody, harmony, and arranging, as well as creative approaches to musical composition, lyric-writing, and an individual writing style. You will choose a curriculum that focusses on classical composition, jazz composition, or songwriting, culminating in a portfolio of your original works. If you are interested in music technology and recording, you will have the option of taking audio recording courses, and you will learn studio and MIDI demo production techniques.
For entry into the Composition program, a digital portfolio of 2-3 scores or recordings of creative work is recommended. Applicants with no prior experience may submit a statement of interest in lieu of a portfolio.
