Historical Instrument Showcase Concert (2022)
SHARE
On the stage of Llewellyn Hall on 10 August, five of the School of Music’s instruments from the Keyboard Institute Collection were arranged for performance in a practical presentation of our research in Historically Informed Performance. The Historical Instrument Showcase Concert served primarily as the launch of our newest instrument, a copy of a Ruckers double manual harpsichord built by renowned Australian craftsman, Carey Beebe, itself an example of contemporary research into historical instrument manufacture.
Performances of period-appropriate music were given by Ariana Odermatt on the Beebe harpsichord, Marie Searles on the McNulty ‘Stein’ fortepiano (playing also with John Ma on the viola d’amore), by Caitlin Manning on the McNulty ‘Graf’ fortepiano, Michael Anthrak on the 1847 Pleyel piano, and Scott Davie and Madelie Joubert on the 1911 Blüthner piano.
The Keyboard Institute is a leading area of research into keyboard instruments, comprising a range of instruments from the 1770 Henrion square piano, through various grand pianos of the 19th century, to modern copies of historical instruments. Staff and students engage with these instruments through performance and research.
